Tool Guide: How Many Links To Rank A Keyword

When creating a link building campaign for your website, blog, or business, a key factor in how well it will perform is the volume of quality backlinks you have compared to your main competitors.

It can be difficult to figure out exactly how many good links you need for your campaign to be successful and make a difference, and this lack of knowledge has made planning the implementation of a link building campaign tough to do.

Thankfully, we have created a brand new tool that will be able to help any and all websites learn what needs to be done to boost their ranking in the SERPs. Here’s a quick guide into how to use this tool and what fascinating insight you can obtain from it.

  1. Enter Your Webpage URL

When you first access the tool, you’ll be welcomed by a form that looks like this:

Here you need to enter the URL of the specific webpage that you want to rank better. To avoid any mistakes in inputting the URL, it’s always best to copy and past it from the search bar in your browser. This guide will be using a local hairdresser in Cheltenham to demonstrate. Simply copy and paste the URL into the column and then click next.

  1. Enter Competitor URLs

Once you click next, the tool will then instruct you to enter the details for your competitors. When figuring out which competitors to include, it’s important that you don’t just use the businesses that you’ve been historically battling with. Instead, you first need to identify your target keyword for the webpage that you want your website to rank. For this example, the keyword phrase will be ‘Cheltenham hairdresser’.

With that keyword identified, you next search it on Google. The websites that appear in the top 5 ranking positions are then the ones you want to input into the tool. Simply copy and paste their URLs into the columns like below and then click next:

  1. Enter Your Details

Once you click next, you’ll be prompted by the tool to enter your basic details, such as your name and email address. It’s important to do this as this will allow us to provide additional support and send important information to you tailored by the results of this tool.

Once you enter your details, click ‘Get Estimation’ to complete the process and get your results.

  1. Analysis Your Results

Once you have completed the form, you’ll be presented with a few different results and metrics that illustrate how well your website is performing now, as well as what needs to be done to help you rank better in the future.

The first thing that you’ll be presented is your webpage  results:

This displays your referring domains – which is the number of external websites that link back to this particular page –  your page authority – which is a score to illustrate how reliable this specific page is – and your domain authority – which is how reliable and trusted your entire website is.

As you can see, our example website isn’t particularly good in all three metrics; however, when you look a the competitor information, it’s clear that they’re not that far ahead of the example webpage:

This gives specific information on each website and also generates an average that you can compare your business against. In terms of Domain and Page Authority, not any of these specific websites are that high, meaning that it’s very viable that a link building campaign will be able to help and improve the businesses ranking.

After being presented this information, the tool will suggest a specific number of links you need to create in order to see results, as well as a minimum amount of links you need to create per month:

For this example website, it’s suggested that 108 links are needed for the site to start ranking a lot better and that this should be implemented over a five-month period with a minimum of 18 links a month to ensure steady growth.

Finally, the tool will also suggest what types of links will be best for you to acquire in order to reach this goal. As you’ve just seen with this tool, every website has a page authority. For your links to be worthwhile, they need to be on pages that have the right minimum DA. The tool will suggest a diagram illustrating the ratio of Domain Authorities you should achieve.

For this particular example, the tool suggests that of the 18 links per month, 5% is used on websites with a DA of 20+, 10% with a DA30+, and an additional 5% on DA+40 websites.

  1. Order Outreach Services

Building a link campaign can be time-consuming and a lot of effort when done in-house, especially if you don’t have the connections to multiple websites and blogs that can supply backlinks to your website. That’s why it’s a good idea to order outreach services online with Creative Labs, who can manage the campaign on your business’s behalf. All you have to do is click the button.
